Panasonic has developed a smartphone-geared system to translate information on signboards into multiple languages in about a second, aiming to cultivate demand among businesses catering to an increasing number of foreign visitors to Japan.

The cloud-based system uses a colored bar code consisting of squares in three different hues. Unlike the current popular QR code, which can be read by a single user at a time by holding a smartphone up close, the new system lets users access the information from as far as 3 meters away, making it suitable for public settings.
