Smart is Using NASA’s Advanced Tech to Create Its Metl Bike Tires
Smart, a NASA-approved startup, is looking to revolutionize bicycle tires with the introduction of its Metl tire design.
The Metl bike tires are made using NASA’s airless shape memory (SMA) tire technology, which was first created to be used for the space agency’s Mars and lunar rovers.
The space tech tires are made using a series of springs that are incredibly durable, respond to their terrain, and don’t need to be inflated.
When the tires come into contact with sharp points like rocks and other barriers that can be found on rough trails, they simply spring back into shape so that the rider can continue without losing control.
This makes them great for off-road excursions that can often result in popped tires, and also helps to prevent excess rubber and waste from going into landfills.
