Tesla is Replacing its Radar Sensors with More Cameras
Tesla is continuing its ‘Tesla Vision’ initiative which outlines the automaker’s intent to have vehicle safety features run through onboard cameras.
The desire to replace radar sensors with onboard cameras comes from the inherent reliability of cameras as opposed to sensors.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated that Tesla Vision has become “so good that radar actually reduced SNR,” where “SNR” refers to signal-to-noise ratio, meaning that the use of radar began creating more interference than it was worth.
This means that the vehicle’s camera systems are so comprehensive that the radar became an unnecessary component in self-driving.
Musk goes on to affirm that humans drive with eyes, so an easy solution to create reliable self-driving cars is to use cameras that essentially act as mechanized eyes.
