Samsung Electronics has unveiled its head-mounted virtual reality (VR) display, Gear VR,.

Which is compatible with the latest Galaxy devices. The nation’s leading electronics giant released the product during the Oculus Connect 2 developer conference in Los Angeles. Samsung is promoting the wider compatibility with its Galaxy smartphones as the biggest feature of the VR device. It works with all Galaxy devices released this year ― the Note 5, S6 Edge Plus, S6 and S6 Edge ― Samsung said. A previous model did not target general customers, but some early adopters and developers. The company said the Gear VR provides users with an immersive experience, letting them enjoy 360-degree videos. “We are excited to release the Gear VR, which we believe will set a new standard in the mobile, cloud-based virtual reality ecosystem,” Samsung Electronics mobile chief Shin Jong-kyun said. The latest model is 22 percent lighter than the previous one. And it has a new cushion to ensure users remain comfortable while using the device, the company said. Samsung previously introduced the device during this year’s IFA fair in Germany. It used the VR device to offer the audience a more vivid experience of a chefs’ cooking event, which was promoting Samsung’s premium home appliances. During the fair, the company also shared its partnership with BMW to help visitors test drive a BMW i3 model. Samsung has been pushing for more partnerships in a bid to incorporate the VR technology into various industry sectors. The company said it has teamed with Oculus VR, the U.S-based VR technology company, to develop the latest Gear VR. Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe said during the conference that Samsung and Oculus have established a new standard for VR, providing optimum mobile VR experiences. He said the mobile VR industry is expected to gain momentum through Samsung VR Gear. The move reflects the electronics giant’s strong drive to invest in the VR business as its next growth engine. Expectations are that Samsung can take a leading position in the market as the company has strengths in producing displays, hardware devices and semiconductors. The Gear VR is $99 (120,000 won), and will be sold in the last quarter of this year.
