NTT Docomo to reintroduce foldable dual-screen smartphone in 2018
Japanese mobile phone operator NTT Docomo Inc will release a new foldable dual-screen smartphone suited to multitasking in January, about five years after a similar smartphone that it put on sale failed to gain popularity.
The company has decided to reintroduce a dual-screen smartphone as there has been a rise in the number of people using multiple applications since the 2013 launch of the previous model, company officials said.
Jointly developed with Chinese telecommunications company ZTE Corp, the new model “M” enables users to carry out two activities simultaneously, such as watching a video on one screen and exchanging messages on the other. The two screens can also be used as a single screen.
Docomo said it will announce the phone’s price at a later date.
In the United States, the smartphone will be sold by AT&T Inc, while Vodafone Group Plc will sell it in Europe.
It will be the first time for a foreign telecom carrier to sell a phone whose development was spearheaded by Docomo, according to the Japanese company.
