Production/storage of ‘CO2-free Hydrogen’ Simplified

JXTG Nippon Oil & Energy Corp, Chiyoda Corp, the University of Tokyo and the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) have successfully verified a technology to produce organic hydride at a low cost by using solar power generation in Australia and extract “CO2-free hydrogen” in Japan.

In general, for storing and transporting hydrogen, it is necessary to store hydrogen generated by water electrolysis in a tank and convert it to methylcyclohexane (MCH, organic hydride).

In the verification test, the four organizations used the “organic hydride electrolytic synthesis method,” which directly produces MCH from water and toluene.

The organic hydride electrolytic synthesis method enables to drastically simplify hydrogen production process, compared with conventional technologies. The costs of facilities for producing MCH with a hydrogen production rate of 6,000Nm3/h (a scale of 3MW) are expected to be reduced by about 50% in the future.

Moreover, the four organizations succeeded in producing about 0.2kg of “CO2-free hydrogen,” which is produced without emitting CO2, by using solar electricity for producing MCH. For the future, they will engage in development in the aim of implementing CO2-free hydrogen production technologies using the method in society.

JXTG Nippon Oil & Energy, QUT and Chiyoda have technologies related to (1) electrolytic synthesis of organic hydride, (2) high-efficiency solar-tracking solar power generation systems and (3) extraction of hydrogen, respectively. This time, they participated in a “society cooperation research” that the University of Tokyo is conducting for establishing a hydrogen supply chain.
